CHALK CIRLCE 2025

** 2025 CRAIG NOEL FOR OUTSTANDING LIGHTING DESIGN

Dr. Yuko Kurahashi

-ON THE THE LEHMAN TRILLOGY
"Lighting designer Sammy Webster’s lighting functions as part of the “stage set.” Rectangle LED flush-mount ceiling light boxes that provide white, blue, and purple colors give an industrial 21st-century feel, the eve of the collapse of Lehman Brothers—September 15, 2008. Indeed, all the furniture pieces and props (pens, a phone, coffee cups, and more) are from this decade, alluding to the ghosts of the three founders visiting The Lehman Brothers’ office. Sectionally focused lighting illuminates each of the three desks separately or collectively, literally treating them as different locales and territories, including the fabric shop in Montgomery, Alabama, the brothers’ house, the New York Stock Exchange, and other places in Alabama and NYC."
-ON THE STRANGERS
"Each production for this company is such an event that it might be all we can handle for now. And opening night was eventful for sure, with some technical difficulties and the curtain delayed by almost 40 minutes, which, in retrospect and after seeing the performance, I get why, as Sammy Webster’s lighting design was an essential, alive part of the frame. A cast of eight actors, different vignettes, and a sort of apocalyptic ending, this West Coast premiere by christopher oscar peña, hit many marks."

-ON TITLE OF SHOW
I can easily say that Sammy Webster‘s lighting design is one of the best I have seen this year and in New Village.

-ON MANIFEST PUSSY
"For Barber’s vision, local lighting designers all recommended recent San Diego State University grad Sammy Webster for the role, who brought a liveliness to the dark theater."

Makayla Hopp

--ON THE STRANGERS
"Webster’s lighting design was a highlight of the show, employing a myriad of objects, colors and more to bring the story to life."
